Two candidates have declared their candidacy to run under the NDP banner in Guelph in the upcoming federal election: Aisha Jahangir and Andy McCann-Pappin. Jahangir is a life-long resident of Guelph. She has worked as a registered nurse for more than 20 years. McCann-Pappin is a long-time NDP activist who ran councilor James Gordon’s past municipal bid.
Jahangir advocated for nurses as a local coordinator in Guelph for more than a decade and served as president of the bargaining unit for two years while working at Homewood. She currently works at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre.
McCann-Pappin was born and raised in the Ward. He has been a long-time local activist, leading the local chapter of the coalition against privatization when the hydro sell-off was announced. He served as president of the Guelph NDP riding association in 2017 and is part of the organizing committee for the local chapter of the Green New Deal. He currently works at the Guelph Campus co-op in student housing.
The Guelph NDP will choose its candidate for the federal election on June 22nd at the Evergreen Centre with registration beginning at 2pm. For more information, please visit guelphndp.ca.
