Don't delay Bill 311
Urgent: tell your MP not to let Canada down
Canada is at an environmental crossroad. With less than two months until the pivotal Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, we still don’t have a credible national strategy to fight global warming. That means no hard targets and no framework for immediate action. If we don’t act now, we will arrive at that conference empty-handed and red-faced. We will have failed our global responsibility.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. The NDP’s acclaimed Climate Change Accountability Act, Bill C-311, sets firm, science-based targets for greenhouse gas reductions. It is our best chance to do our part and avert environmental disaster.
On Wednesday afternoon, the House will vote on whether to delay C-311 by sending it back to committee. If it is delayed, it is highly unlikely that the bill will become law in time for Copenhagen. We’re urging all MPs not to delay this bill and to take action now. Canadians—and the world—are watching us. They’re expecting us to make the right choice.
You can urge MPs to do just that. Email your MP and urge him or her not to delay the Climate Change Accountability Act any longer. Say that you want action on the environment immediately. Say that you want a Canada that participates at Copenhagen, not one that sits on the sidelines.
Our time to act is now.
Make sure parliament hears your voice. Use the sample letter below to email your MP.
Dear XXXXX,
I am appalled that Canada still does not have a national climate change strategy, less than two months before the Copenhagen Conference. You have the opportunity and the responsibility to change that by passing the Climate Change Accountability Act without delay. I hope that is what you’ll do.
We’re relying on our government to be leaders—not followers—when it comes to global warming. If our national environmental plan is delayed yet again, our country will fall behind and not live up to its duty. We all expect better of Canada and we all expect better of our politicians.
Please make the responsible choice and vote not to delay the Climate Change Accountability Act. Canada is running out of time.
Sincerely,
